The Divine Heritage
Kedarnath is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in the world. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to atone for the sins of killing their kin. Shiva, wishing to elude them, took the form of a bull and hid in the Garhwal Himalayas. When detected by Bhima, he dove into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface at Kedarnath. The remaining parts of Shiva's body appeared at four other sites (Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar), collectively revered as the Panch Kedar.

Mandatory biometric registration via the Uttarakhand Tourism Portal is required prior to commencing the journey.
High-altitude advisory: Gaurikund to Kedarnath is a strenuous 16 km trek. Carrying a medical fitness certificate is highly recommended.
Helicopter bookings must only be done through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal to avoid scams.
Ponies, doli (palanquin), and porter services are available at Gaurikund registration counters.

Temple Information & Significance
The Kedarnath Temple is an architectural marvel built of massive stone slabs on a rectangular platform. It houses a conical rock formation worshipped as the hump of Lord Shiva in his bull form. A massive statue of Nandi stands guard outside the entrance.
Pilgrim Registration Details
All pilgrims must register on the official Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal. Biometric verification is checked at multiple points including Sonprayag and Gaurikund.
Yatra Route & How to Reach
The Yatra begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh, moving via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi to Sonprayag. From Sonprayag, local shuttles run to Gaurikund, which is the starting point of the steep 16 km walking path to the temple.
Accommodation & Facilities
GMVN guest houses, private tents, and dharamshalas are available at Kedarnath. Booking in advance is highly recommended due to high demand and strict capacity limits.
