Significance & Lore

The Divine Heritage

Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his aspect as Badrinarayan. According to scripture, Lord Vishnu meditated here for thousands of years in deep austerity. To protect him from the harsh climate, his consort Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree (Jujube) to shelter him. Touched by her devotion, Vishnu named the spot Badrika Ashram. Badrinath is also associated with the Pandavas' path to heaven and is believed to have been established as a primary pilgrimage center by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
