Gangotri

Situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,200 ft) in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is one of India's most revered high-altitude pilgrimage destinations. Set along the banks of the sacred Bhagirathi River (the main stem of the Ganges) amidst giant Himalayan peaks, Gangotri serves as a core shrine of the Chota Char Dham circuit and marks the spiritual origin of the holy River Ganga.

The Sacred Abode of Goddess Ganga

Gangotri is a serene high-altitude sanctuary where deep Vedic traditions meet dramatic glacial landscapes. According to Hindu mythology, this is the sacred spot where Sage Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring the divine Ganga down from the heavens to purify the souls of his ancestors. To mitigate the river's destructive force upon landing, Lord Shiva released Ganga through his matted locks, giving rise to the Bhagirathi River.

The main Gangotri Temple, constructed out of gleaming white granite in the 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and later restored, stands right on the right bank of the Bhagirathi River. Pilgrims gather here to offer prayers, take a purifying dip in the freezing glacial waters, and take home sealed copper pots of untouched Ganga Jal.

Gateway to the Glaciers & Harsil Valley

Beyond its immense spiritual importance, Gangotri acts as a major gateway for high-altitude Himalayan trekking and scenic valley exploration:

• Harsil Valley & Dharali (~25 km before Gangotri): Known for its pine forests, apple orchards, and traditional wooden hamlets along the riverbanks, Harsil serves as a tranquil base for travelers acclimatizing before driving up to Gangotri.
• Gartang Gali: Located near Lanka Bridge en route to Gangotri, this restored 150-year-old wooden cliffside boardwalk was historically used by Tibetan merchants for cross-border trade.
• Gaumukh Glacier Trek: Located 19 km further inside Gangotri National Park, Gaumukh is the true geographic snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the physical origin point of the river. Higher trails extend to Tapovan ($4,463\text{ m}$), offering views of Mount Shivling and the Bhagirathi peak group.

The Winter Abode Shift

When sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall close the Gangotri shrine in mid-November, the symbolic idol (Utsav Murti) of Goddess Ganga is brought down in a procession to the Mukhba Village near Harsil, where daily worship continues throughout the winter until the temple reopens in spring.
