Gangotri
Significance & Lore
The Divine Heritage
Gangotri is the seat of Goddess Ganga. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance for centuries to bring Ganga down to Earth from heaven to cleanse the ashes of his ancestors. Realizing that the Earth could not sustain Ganga's powerful descent, Shiva caught the river in his matted locks, releasing her in gentle streams. The stone slab where Bhagirath meditated, the Bhagirath Shila, sits near the white granite temple built by Nepalese General Amar Singh Thapa.
