Situated at an elevation of 3,300 meters (10,830 ft) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath is one of India’s most sacred high-altitude pilgrimage destinations. Nestled along the banks of the roaring Alaknanda River and flanked by the dramatic Nar and Narayana mountain ranges, Badrinath holds a supreme place in Hindu spiritual tradition as both a core stop on the Chota Char Dham circuit and one of the four legendary All-India Char Dhams.
Badrinath is a high-altitude sanctuary where deep-rooted faith meets the raw beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas. The centerpiece of this holy town is the ancient Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badri Vishal form. According to sacred lore, Lord Vishnu performed rigorous penance here, while Goddess Lakshmi assumed the form of a Badri (wild berry) tree to protect him from harsh mountain conditions.
Unlike many high-altitude Himalayan shrines that demand strenuous multi-day treks, Badrinath is directly accessible via a scenic motorable drive along NH-7. The journey winds past the famous Panch Prayag—the five holy river confluences of Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Nandaprayag—making the drive itself a soul-stirring road trip.
Beyond the temple gates, Badrinath is rich in natural geothermal phenomena and ancient legends:
Due to extreme sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, the Badrinath shrine closes every year in mid-November. During the winter months, the symbolic deity (Utsav Murti) is brought down in a grand procession to the Narasimha Temple in Joshimath, where daily worship continues until the high-altitude shrine reopens in spring.
