Hemkund Sahib

Situated at an extraordinary elevation of 4,329 meters (14,200 ft) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Sri Hemkund Sahib is one of the highest revered Sikh pilgrimage sites in the world. Nestled beside a crystal-clear glacial lake and enclosed by seven snow-draped Himalayan peaks (the Sapt Sring), Hemkund Sahib combines deep spiritual sanctity, high-altitude mountain terrain, and breathtaking glacial landscapes.

High-Altitude Spiritual Sanctuary & Glacial Lake

Hemkund (literally meaning "Lake of Snow") is a sacred high-altitude sanctuary where pilgrims and mountain enthusiasts trek to offer prayers and experience severe alpine wilderness. According to Sikh tradition documented in the Bachat Natak, Guru Gobind Singh Ji (the tenth Sikh Guru) performed intense meditation at this exact spot in his previous incarnation as Sage Dusht Daman.

The primary center of reverence is the star-shaped, stone-and-concrete Sri Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, standing directly along the shores of the high-altitude glacial lake. The lake is fed by glaciers from the surrounding peaks, reflecting the majestic white summits and pristine blue mountain skies.

Dual Faith Heritage & Rare Flora

In addition to its supreme importance in Sikhism, Hemkund holds deep significance in Hindu traditions. A small stone temple dedicated to Lord Laxman (brother of Lord Rama) stands near the Gurudwara, marking the spot where Rishi Medhasa and Laxman are believed to have performed penance.

Along the high-altitude rocky slopes surrounding the Gurudwara, travelers can spot the rare Brahma Kamal (Saussurea obvallata), the sacred Himalayan flower known for blooming only at extreme elevations above 3,800 meters.

Unlike the gentler, flower-covered meadows of the adjacent Valley of Flowers, the trail to Hemkund Sahib is a steep physical test of endurance and lung capacity.

• The Trail: A 6 km continuous steep incline from the base village of Ghangaria featuring stone staircases, switchbacks, and a vertical elevation gain of over 1,200 meters.
• Thinner Air & Acclimatization: Pushing past 4,000 meters means atmospheric oxygen levels drop noticeably. Trekkers must maintain a slow, steady breathing rhythm and stay well-hydrated.
• Transport Support: For elderly pilgrims, families, or travelers needing assistance, pony services and pithus (basket carriers) operate along the Ghangaria–Hemkund route.
• Day-Trip Rule: Due to freezing sub-zero temperatures, thin air, and unpredictable weather shifts, overnight stays at the summit are not permitted. Pilgrims must complete their prayers and return to Ghangaria by late afternoon.
