Discover Hemkund Sahib
Hemkund Sahib is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in India, located in the breathtaking Chamoli district of Uttarakhand near Joshimath. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 15,200 feet above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas, this sacred Sikh shrine attracts thousands of devotees, trekkers, and nature lovers every year. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, glaciers, alpine meadows, and a crystal-clear glacial lake, Hemkund Sahib offers a spiritual and adventurous experience unlike any other destination in Uttarakhand.
The name “Hemkund” translates to “Lake of Snow,” perfectly describing the serene lake beside the gurudwara that remains partially frozen for most of the year. According to Sikh beliefs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, meditated at this sacred location in his previous life. The gurudwara, officially known as Sri Hemkund Sahib Ji, has become an important pilgrimage center for Sikhs from across India and around the world. Adjacent to the gurudwara is the ancient Lakshman Temple, which also holds religious significance in Hindu mythology.
The journey to Hemkund Sahib is itself a memorable adventure. Travelers first reach Govindghat, located on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway, and then proceed toward Ghangaria through a scenic trekking route. The trek passes through dense forests, waterfalls, wooden bridges, mountain streams, and beautiful valleys filled with rare Himalayan flowers. During the monsoon season, the nearby Valley of Flowers National Park becomes a paradise of colorful alpine blooms and attracts photographers and nature enthusiasts from around the world.
Hemkund Sahib is usually open to visitors from June to September due to heavy snowfall during the winter months. The weather remains cold even during summer, making warm clothing essential for all travelers. Pilgrims often begin their trek early in the morning to avoid afternoon rain and changing mountain weather conditions. Pony and helicopter services are also available for travelers who prefer a more comfortable journey.
The peaceful atmosphere, spiritual energy, and untouched natural beauty of Hemkund Sahib create a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you are visiting for religious devotion, trekking adventure, photography, or simply to witness the majestic Himalayan landscapes, Hemkund Sahib offers a perfect combination of spirituality and nature. The destination is considered one of the most beautiful high-altitude pilgrimage sites in India and remains a must-visit location for anyone exploring the spiritual and scenic wonders of Uttarakhand.
