Chopta, Tungnath and Chandrashila form one of the most rewarding short trekking experiences in Uttarakhand. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, the route brings together quiet mountain meadows, dense forests, an ancient Shiva temple and spectacular views of some of the region's most prominent Himalayan peaks.
Chopta is the starting point for the trek and is surrounded by forests of rhododendron, oak and deodar. Often called the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand," the area is known for its open green meadows and peaceful mountain setting. During spring, blooming rhododendrons add colour to the landscape, while winter can transform the region into a snow-covered trekking destination.
From Chopta, the trail climbs towards Tungnath Temple at approximately 3,680 metres (12,073 feet). Tungnath is one of the five sacred Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is regarded as the highest Shiva temple in the world. The stone temple, surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery, has deep religious significance for devotees visiting Uttarakhand.
The trek continues beyond Tungnath towards Chandrashila Summit, reaching approximately 4,000 metres (13,123 feet). The final section is steeper, but the panoramic views from the summit make the climb worthwhile. On clear days, trekkers can see magnificent Himalayan peaks including Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Nanda Devi, Trishul and Shivling.
What makes this destination particularly appealing is the combination of adventure and spirituality. The trek can be completed in a relatively short period compared with many high-altitude Himalayan routes, making it popular with both experienced trekkers and people looking for their first Himalayan trekking experience.
The landscape changes considerably with the seasons. Spring brings colourful flowers and fresh greenery, summer offers comfortable trekking conditions, and autumn is known for crisp skies and excellent mountain visibility. During winter, heavy snowfall can cover Chopta and the Tungnath trail, creating a completely different experience for travellers prepared for cold-weather trekking.
Whether you are travelling for the spiritual importance of Tungnath, the mountain views from Chandrashila or simply the peaceful landscapes around Chopta, this destination offers a memorable introduction to the higher Garhwal Himalayas.
