Uttarkashi (Kashi of the North)

Set along the banks of the sacred Bhagirathi River, Uttarkashi is one of the most important towns in the Garhwal Himalayas. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,158 metres (3,800 feet), the town brings together ancient temples, riverfront traditions, mountain culture and access to some of Uttarakhand's most spectacular high-altitude landscapes.

The name Uttarkashi means “Kashi of the North,” reflecting the town's strong association with the spiritual traditions of Varanasi. At the heart of the town stands the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
